Ziniare: The Regional Judicial Police Service of the Plateau-Central (SRPJ-Oubritenga) has dismantled two gangs involved in fraud, currency counterfeiting, and the use of forged documents in organized operations within the Oubritenga region, as reported by the National Police on its official page.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the first group targeted victims in public areas, such as bars, offering fraudulent banknote “multiplication” services. Once their victims’ trust was secured, the scammers would swap bags containing both real and counterfeit currency, disappearing with the genuine money.
The second group operated through remote scams. They collected contact information from discarded business and government agency documents to propose fake job or sales offers, subsequently extorting money via mobile money transfers.
The network reportedly included foreign nationals who utilized false documents to avoid detection. The police operation led to the arrest of four active members and the confiscation of counterfeit notes in both FCFA and foreign currencies, alongside computer equipment, telephones, electronic chips, and motorcycles.
The National Police acknowledged the community’s cooperation in the operation’s success and urged the public to remain vigilant, encouraging them to report suspicious activities to the hotlines 17, 16, and 1010.
