A man accused of murdering 27-year-old Nziko Simon Yvan Arthur in Yaounde on August 4, 2024 has confessed to the crime, revealing his motive to police in Ekounou. During a crime scene reconstruction on September 12, the suspect admitted that his desire to join a criminal gang led him to commit the murder. According to the police superindendent in Ekounou, the gang leader had given the man a gruesome initiation requirement: kill someone and provide proof of the act.'On August 4, he encountered the victim who had no prior issues with him and stabbed him 12 times to ensure he wouldn't survive' the superintendent said, adding that 'After the attack, the suspect fled with some of the victim's personal documents'.The suspect sought refuge in a church following the crime but worshippers in the congregation didn't recognize him as a member of the church and became suspicious.'As he tried to leave, the pullover he was wearing and which contained the victim's personal documents, was seized. He resisted because he n eeded the documents to prove to the gang leader that he had carried out the muder and at that point, the police were called to arrest him' the police official added. Further investigations led to the apprehension of the gang leader who was equally present during the reenactment of the crime scene. Both men are now in police custody while awaiting trial in a court of law.
