Verdefam’s executive director defends the need to demystify the first menstruation in adolescence

The executive director of the Cabo Verdean Association for the Protection of the Family (Verdefam), Elisabete de Jesus, highlighted the importance of demystifying the first menstruation in adolescence and to having more dialogue between parents and children.

Elisabete de Jesus made these statements Tuesday in an interview with Inforpress, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the training course entitled “Let’s talk about menstruation”, promoted by Verdefam, as part of a partnership with the Ministry of Health funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The course aimed at 25 adolescents, aims to raise awareness and empower adolescents between 10 and 14 years of age in communities with useful information about menstruation, the reproductive system, prevention of sexual abuse and among others.

“Verdefam works on its social and health component and the theme of menstruation is relevant because it is an issue we have always addressed and this year, in our program of activities, we carry out this action involving adolescents and during today we will prepare adolescents on how to deal with emotional and behavioral changes in adolescence”, she said.
