Praia: U.S. Embassy launches YALI 2023 program

The Embassy of the United States of America (USA) held this Thursday in the City of Praia the launch of the Mandela Washington program for Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), which annually selects six Cabo Verdeans.

Every year, the opportunity is conceived for 700 young African leaders, aged 25 to 35, to go to the United States to exchange, courses and leadership training to strengthen democratic governance and promote peace and security in African countries and North America.

Speaking to the press moments before the program’s launch, U.S. Ambassador to Cabo Verde Jeff Daigle said the program had had a major impact in Cabo Verde.

“We hope that these young people will use their skills, connections to help develop Cabo Verde,” the ambassador said, noting that since the program’s launch in 2020, 50 young Cabo Verdeans have participated in this program. The group of young people selected for YALI 2023 travels to the United States next summer, where they will meet a six-week exchange and training schedule.
