Portugal: Trial in the case of the death of Giovani Rodrigues resumed today in Bragança

The trial in the death of Cape Verdean Giovani Rodrigues is resumed today, at the Bragança Court, to hear the three friends who accompanied the victim at dawn when he suffered a head injury that caused him the death.

The trial resumes after the Bragança Court accepted the defense lawyer’s request to hear again the Cape Verdean’s friends, who were also victims in the early hours of December 21, 2019, when 21-year-old Giovani Rodrigues, suffered a head injury that caused his death ten days later at Hospital de Santa António, in Porto.

The case had the judgment reading scheduled for September 20, but it was postponed because the collective of judges decided to make non-substantial changes to the facts that would have occurred that morning resulting in the qualified murder accusation to seven young people from Bragança. Moreover, only one of the seven defendants allegedly hit the victim while handling a stick, with no intention of killing.

As it understands that this is a new fact, the defendant’s defense wants to exercise the right to question the same, in the session scheduled for 10:00 (09:00 in Cape Verde), in Bragança, the city where the victim had arrived in October 2019, from Fogo Island, to study at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB).
