Porto Novo: Farmers reinforce the cultivation of tomatoes and cabbage at this time to “feint” the tomato moth

Farmers in the municipality of Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, are reinforcing the cultivation of tomatoes and cabbage to “feint” the pest “tomato moth”, which attacks these crops in warmer periods .

Farmers explained that at this time of the year, when it gets a little cold, the “tomato moth” gives respite to farmers. Those take the opportunity to reinforce the cultivation of tomatoes and cabbage, the two crops most affected by this pest, which has been causing damage in several areas, especially Ribeira Fria, Alto Mira, Ribeira dos Bodes and Casa de Meio.

Henrique da Luz, representative of farmers in Ribeira dos Bodes, explained that this pest only starts to attack crops from March onwards, which is why the first months of the year are conducive to reinforcing cultivation, especially tomatoes.

“This pest gives farmers respite at this time of year, but from March it starts to attack”, noted this farmer, confirming that the tomato moth, detected in the municipality of Porto Novo almost two decades ago, has also been attacking the cabbage.
