Porto Novo: Farmers predict “good harvest” of sugar cane with abundant rains in 2022

Farmers in the Municipality of Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, expect, from January 2023, to achieve “a good harvest” of sugarcane due to the abundant rains recorded in this year of 2022.

The local associations of farmers consider that, when it rains in abundance, as it happened this year, the sugar cane harvest exceeds expectations, therefore foreseeing “a good harvest” from January, when the period of industrialization of cane brandy begins in Cape Verde.

“In fact, when it rains as it did this year, we always have a good harvest of sugar cane. The plantations look good”, confirmed the president of the Association of Farmers of Alto Mira, Ederlino Fortes.

The drought that hit this municipality in recent years, conditioned the sugar cane harvest and, consequently, the production of cane brandy, according to farmers.
