Porto Novo celebrates Municipality Day and 59 years of creation of the municipality

Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, today celebrates the Municipality Day, created in September 2, 1962, with elevation of the then administrative post to the status of county, by order of the then Minister of Overseas, Adriano Moreira.

Through the ministerial legislative act, published in the Official Bulletin of Cabo Verde number 35, of September 2, 1962, Adriano Moreira extinguished the administrative post of Porto Novo, which was part of the municipality of Paul, and created the second class council with the same name, integrating the parishes of São João Baptista and Santo André.

September 2nd, marked with a solemn session at the Municipal Assembly, is a symbolic date for the Porto Novo citizens, who are also celebrating the sixteenth anniversary of the city of Porto Novo.

This date also marks a time when Porto Novo, according to municipal officials, faces “many challenges”, despite the “gains”, in terms of development, achieved over the almost 60 years of its existence.
