Population Census: President of the Republic calls on Cape Verdeans to collaborate with the V RGHP surveyors

The President of the Republic today asked Cape Verdeans to collaborate with surveyors from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of the V General Census of Population and Housing (RGHP-2021), which is being held 16 to 30 June, in national territory.

In a statement to the Nation, at the Presidential Palace, in Praia, Jorge Carlos Fonseca recalled that the RGHP is a “fundamental” task for Cape Verde to define its public policies.

“Basically, the Census of Population and Housing is to find out how many people we are here in the archipelago and how we are. This is naturally important for all titles”, he explained.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca stated, however, that this tool is an important assumption in the definition of public policies, namely in the family, housing and economy.

“Therefore, it is a fundamental presupposition and, therefore, I appeal to all Cape Verdeans who are willing to collaborate, as this is a task of great national interest”, he stressed.

For the highest magistrate of the Nation, the constraints of the covid-19 pandemic “are not an impediment” for this operation not to take place, as long as all the health recommendations, by the investigators and the population, are complied with.

The General Census of Population and Housing, Cape Verde's largest statistical operation, takes place every ten years, in accordance with United Nations guidelines, and aims to obtain data on the population and relevant social aspects that serve as a basis for development planning closer to the country's reality.

For the V RGPH it was recommended the use of new technologies in the interview of field agents, for the prevention of the new coronavirus, and the use of new media to raise awareness of the population.

The results of the RGPH-2021, according to INE, make it possible to facilitate dialogue between authorities at central and local levels, as well as between the Government and development partners, especially in the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and strategies, especially the Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development (PEDS).
