The Prime Minister of Portugal said this Monday, in Mindelo, that the protection of the oceans is a global cause and its approach must focus on the United Nations, researchers, and environmentalists calling for joint efforts to protect the seas.
According to António Costa, who was speaking at the Oceans conference that took place as part of the Ocean Race passing through Cape Verde, the protection of the oceans and their biodiversity is a global cause. Moreover, being global, it only makes sense if carried out through a multilateral approach centered on the United Nations and through participatory processes involving not only governments but also all of civil society.
“The conference resulted in a political declaration entitled ‘Our Ocean, Our Future, Our Responsibility’. It is now important that we assume our responsibilities and move, together, towards a true agenda for the protection of the Oceans, achieving the commitments based on the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda”. António Costa defended, recalling the United Nations Ocean Conference, held last year in Lisbon, capital of Portugal, which resulted in a “strong political declaration” that set out key measures to save the oceans.
According to the head of the Portuguese Government, a credible strategy to meet the decarbonisation targets and tackle climate change will necessarily involve a blue and green transition. This is because, he clarified, and it will not be possible to achieve the goals “of zero emissions without considering the decisive role that the sea plays in regulating the climate”.
