North Santiago: MpD deputies recognize that the fishing sector needs more investment

The deputies of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, in power) from the North Santiago constituency recognized this Thursday the need to invest more in the fisheries sector, especially at the infrastructure linked to the sector.

Speaking to the press, the spokesperson for the parliamentarians, Francisco Sanches, said that the visit started today by the municipality of São Miguel and ends this Friday in Santa Cruz, is part of the preparation of the debate with the Minister of the Sea, Abraão Vicente, scheduled for the first parliamentary session in February.

The visit, which includes these two of the four municipalities that have fishing as an activity, also aims to verify « in loco » the activities of institutions linked to the fisheries sector in the northern region of the island of Santiago. Moreover, listen to the concerns of fishermen and fishmongers, in order to have a greater perception of the challenges and proposals for solutions.

In São Miguel, parliamentarians visited some institutions linked to the fisheries sector, namely the Escola do Mar branch, inaugurated in 2021, which, as progressed so far, has already trained 17 young people in outboard motor maintenance and around 40 fishmongers in conservation of fish.
