Mouhoun: The Governor of the Bankui region, Babo Pierre Bassinga, chaired the regional consultation meeting on land transport in Dedougou with public, private, and associative actors in the sector. The meeting aimed to draw up an uncompromising inventory and propose avenues for improvement adapted to local realities.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the regional consultation meeting held on September 15, 2025, serves as a preparatory step for the national general meeting on land transport. The general objective is to enable local stakeholders to actively contribute to national thinking on reforming the land transport sector. The consultations focus on identifying the problems that undermine the sub-sector and proposing concrete measures for effective reform implementation, alongside suggesting new measures where necessary.
The consultations aim to encourage the emergence of innovative solutions, particularly technological ones, to modernize transport and strengthen the system’s safety and sustainability. Discussions are expected to highlight ways to improve the sector’s professionalization and competitiveness, considering the economic and social specificities of the Boucle du Mouhoun.
Governor Babo Pierre Bassinga emphasized the strategic importance of the sector for the economy and sustainable development, while acknowledging the transporters affected by terrorism. Despite efforts by the State and its partners, the sector continues to face challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, organizational problems, non-compliance with regulations, and security constraints in certain areas.
Bassinga noted that the regional consultations provide an opportunity to listen to all voices and develop proposals that reflect local realities. He encouraged participants to engage constructively, stressing that the reform of land transport must be a result of collective intelligence.
The consultation was structured around seven major themes covering all dimensions of land transport, including road transport, urban and peri-urban transport, river transport, freight and supply, and the organization of transport stakeholders in the driving training and testing system.
The stakeholders’ report recommends strengthening the organization and cohesion of carriers, promoting road safety through checkpoints and rigorous regulation enforcement, and developing freight access strategies. It also emphasizes modernizing the driving education system, promoting river transport by developing the Mouhoun River, and improving road, urban, and peri-urban infrastructure. These guidelines aim to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of transport services while promoting the region’s economic and social integration.
