Minister of Health states alcohol remains the most consumed psychoactive substance nationwide

The Minister of Health said the alcohol remains the most consumed psychoactive substance in the country and the main addictive drug motivates the search and treatment in health structures.

Arlindo do Rosário made this statement Thursday to the press, on the sidelines of the ceremony to commemorate the National Day to Combat Alcohol Abuse and the fifth anniversary of the campaign “Less alcohol, more life”.

According to the ruler, in 2020, according to the available data of health structures, recovery centers and organizations, 566 patients were in treatment at the facilities in all municipalities of the archipelago, representing 66 percent (%) patients treated for dependence on psychoactive substances.

However, he said, many of those who sought treatment for dependence on an illicit substance were legally drinking alcohol, with 80% of patients benefiting from outpatient treatment and 20% on an outpatient basis.
