Defying threats and calls for a boycott, residents of Mamfe in the South West region's Manyu division celebrated Cameroon's 52nd National Unity Day on May 20 with a massive turnout. The festivities at the Mamfe ceremonial ground began at 10:07 a.m. with the arrival of Senior Divisional Officer Awounfac Alienou Yves Bertrand, accompanied by military honors, medal awards, and cultural performances by groups from Manyu and Lebialem divisions, as well as neighboring Nigeria. A military and civilian march past followed, featuring pupils and students from public and private schools showcasing their marching skills. Political, social, and cultural institutions and groups concluded the march past with messages on placards and signboards. In his address, Manyu Division's SDO condemned the recent execution of seven security forces in the area, but assured that the incident has not deterred defense and security forces from safeguarding the division's security. Mamfe Mayor Robertson Tabenchong Ashu praised the popula tion, military, and administration for their resolve to return to peace, despite celebrating just weeks after the murder of seven gendarmes. He urged locals to collaborate with the military to ensure continued peace and development in Mamfe. This year's National Unity Day was celebrated under the theme 'Army and Nation, Together for a United, Peaceful, and Prosperous Cameroon.' Source: Cameroon News Agency
