Level of democratic maturity in the country “satisfies” but there are “shortcomings” should be eliminated – Rui Semedo

The president of the African Independence Party of Cabo Verde (PAICV), Rui Semedo, said Saturday in the City of Praia that the level of democratic maturity in the country “satisfies” but warned that there are “shortcomings” should be eliminated.

The statement was made to the press, on the sidelines of the conference on “Democratic Transition and Quality of Democracy”, held by the PAICV parliamentary group alusive to February 19, 1990, a date referenced by that political force as the one that marks the opening to pluripartisanship in Cabo Verde.

Among these shortcomings, Rui Semedo pointed out the possibility to encourage greater political participation of the population in electoral acts”, to reduce the abstention rate, “which is still considered high”.

“But after the elections, the population, voters in general should be able to monitor, control, supervise and hold accountable those who are elected, so that the democratic exercise of the population is not only at the time of voting,” he said.
