Island of Maio will have its special tourist economic zone and be an international business center – Olavo Correia

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Olavo Correia presented on Saturday the project for the special tourist economic zone of Maio, during which he expressed the executive wants to make the island an international business center.

As Olavo Correia explained, this initiative follows the government’s policy on creating special economic zones in several islands of the country with a vocation for the different areas and, specifically for the island of Maio, the goal is to create a special economic zone with a vocation for the tourism sector and at the same time create an international business center.

According to the minister, this bill has already been debated and approved in the Council of Ministers and will be debated in the Parliamentary House, where the aim is to create an authority with competence to develop policies and create instruments to attract private investments, both national and foreign in the three ZDTI of the island, with a view to “accelerating” the growth dynamics of the island.

Olavo Correia said that they intend, with this measure, to “facilitate and respond” to investor demand and promote the island and the ZDTI, both in the country and beyond, stressing that the same authority will have as responsibilities “to create the conditions of planning, to plan in the long term the consequences of housing, sanitation”, among others.
