Government signs financing protocol with 22 community and private radios in the country

This measure emerged within the scope of a national plan for the restructuring of the Private Press in the country, extended to community, regional and national radios and aims to support the projects of these stations that have been struggling with serious challenges.

The Government of Cape Verde awarded, to twenty-two Community and Private Radios, financial support in the amount of 7,313,716 PTE 00 ECV (seven million, three hundred and thirteen thousand, seven hundred and sixteen Cape Verdean escudos), through the protocol signed between both, in December 2022.

This measure emerged within the scope of a national plan for the restructuring of the Private Press in the country, extended to community, regional and national radios and aims to support the projects of these stations that have been struggling with serious challenges. By Decree-Law No. 55/2017, of November 20, 2017,of State Incentive to Social Communication, which has as its assumption the strengthening and plural and robust exercise of the freedoms and rights to inform and to be informed, encourage the creation, sustainability, competitiveness and innovation of the media, boosting the development of partnerships, promoting the improvement of conditions for accessing and exercising journalism, disseminating skills and employability, spreading reading and literacy and promoting civic, environmental and health education.

Among the bodies receiving these subsidies are the 10 community radio stations in the country, which have been receiving an annual subsidy as part of the State Incentives package for Private Social Communication, and for the first time, with specific support , 12 Private Radio Stations nationwide and Regional, which has been dealing with the economic effects of the ongoing war in Ukraine globally and the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the attribution of this financial support to the media, the Government clearly establishes a new paradigm and a new vision with a view to supporting the development of the media sector, mainly the Radios, as they are a great partner of the Country, with a preponderant role in the question of proximity, in the sense of stimulating and bringing information every day to public opinion in Cape Verde.
