Government decides to extend contingency situation throughout the national territory

This morning, at a press conference, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Filomena Gonçalves, said that the Government concluded that there is a need to maintain a set of prevention and containment measures, to safeguard public health and preserve the capacity to response from the national health system.

The Council of Ministers met, extraordinarily, this Monday, February 14, and decided to extend the contingency situation throughout the national territory. The decision arises from an analysis carried out by the National Health Directorate on the epidemiological situation in Cabo Verde caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This morning, at a press conference, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Filomena Gonçalves, said that the Government concluded that there is a need to maintain a set of prevention and containment measures, to safeguard public health and preserve the capacity to response from the national health system.

According to the minister, in recent days, there has been a continuous improvement in the pandemic situation. However, the positivity rate is still at 77 per 100,000 inhabitants, higher than the recommended international level of 25 per 100,000 inhabitants. For this, the Government believes that it is necessary to maintain the incentives for vaccination against the Covid-19 virus, in the acceleration of the process of administration of the booster dose. With regard to Carnival and Ash Wednesday, cultural and traditional activities that involve agglomeration of people, could considerably complicate prevention and containment measures in the fight against the spread of SARS-CoV-2. In this sense, exceptionally, the traditional point tolerance will not be decreed at this time. The measure enters into force at 00:00 on the 19th of February and will be in force for fifteen days.
