Freedom House 2022: PAICV accuses MpD of politicizing data to disrupt analysis of identified weaknesses

The PAICV (opposition) accused the Movement for Democracy (MpD – power) of politicizing the data from the Freedom House 2022 report with the aim of disturbing a good reading and analysis of the weaknesses identified.

In a press conference this Tuesday, , the member of the Political Commission of the PAICV, Fidel de Pina Cardoso reacted to the data in the report, released last week, and to the MpD press conference given this Monday, the 31st. He said that the party values and is satisfied with the fact that Freedom House distinguished Cape Verde as the first democracy in Africa.

“It is clear that Freedom House values the fact that Cape Verde lives in democratic stability, with regular elections, with political alterations, with legislature governments, with governability and, certainly, without coups d’état and without political crises in our country. … Fact is indeed a reason for satisfaction for all of us and the PAICV values this recognition because it knows that this is the result of the effort of all Cape Verdeans”, he argued.

However, he underlined that this assessment follows a series of other “less good” assessments made by several other institutions, such as Mo-Ibrahim, or Fitch Ratings or Bloom Consulting, on the economic attractiveness of African countries, where Cabo Verde recorded setbacks, with “important” losses of positions.
