The Electoral Commission (EC) in the Akuapim South and New Juaben South Municipalities have registered 877 citizens during the three-day mop-up voter registration exercise which started on Thursday, August 1, 2024. The EC initiated the mop-up voter registration exercise to allow citizens who failed to register during the previous voter registration exercises to be captured in the system as eligible voters in the country and presented with voter identification cards. The exercise gave inmates the opportunity to register as they had the right to exercise their franchise according to the 1992 constitution despite being convicted of crimes. Among the registrants were 456 females and 421 males and were dominated by citizens under 21 years old with 845. Information from the EC office to the Ghana News Agency during a visit to the voting centre that 333 citizens of the 524 citizens registered in the municipality presented their Ghana Cards as proof of their nationality and age. 'Three hundred and thirty-three p eople came with their Ghana Cards, 189 came with guarantors, and two with their passport booklets to serve as evidence of their nationality and age,' he said. The source noted that the EC experienced fluctuations in the network signal at the New Juaben South EC office during the first two days which led to delays and postponement of registrations. However, every citizen who visited the office to be registered was captured and presented their voter identification cards before the mop-up voter registration exercise ended. Meanwhile, in the Akuapim South Municipality, Mr. Benjamin Amankwah, the EC Officer noted that 302 registrants presented guarantors and 51 of the 353 registrants presented their Ghana Cards. He said the EC did not face any challenges, be it network signal or double registration attempt, adding that, the process was peaceful and smooth. Source: Ghana News Agency
