Cape Verde’s Fairytale World Cup Journey Continues with Argentina Clash; Spain Advances, Uruguay Exits**

Houston: World Cup debutants Cape Verde will face reigning champions Argentina in the knockout rounds after drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia, extending their fairytale journey on the world stage. The stalemate in Houston, coupled with Spain's 1-0 victory over Uruguay, secured Cape Verde a runner-up position in Group H, finishing just behind Spain.

According to TRTworld.com, the archipelago nation of just over 500,000 people has drawn all three of its group matches, setting up a historic encounter with Lionel Messi's Argentina in Miami on July 3. This marks another remarkable chapter for Cape Verde, the third-smallest team in World Cup history by population. The emotional moment saw players and fans in tears as they waited for the final confirmation of Spain's victory over Uruguay, which came through a mobile phone, sparking jubilant celebrations.

Spain, having been held to a 0-0 draw by Cape Verde in their opening game, topped Group H with seven points. Cape Verde followed with three points, while Uruguay and Saudi Arabia were both eliminated with two points each. Spain will face the second-place team from Group J, either Algeria or Austria, in the next stage of the tournament.

In a bid to make history, Cape Verde's coach Bubista made significant changes to his starting lineup, while retaining goalkeeper Vozinha, who heroically preserved a clean sheet against European champions Spain in Cape Verde's first-ever World Cup match. The team then secured a 2-2 draw against two-time former champions Uruguay, setting the stage for their crucial match against Saudi Arabia.

In Houston, Cape Verde had a slightly better first half against a Saudi side that previously drew 1-1 with Uruguay and suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain. A key moment came when Saudi's experienced defender Hassan al-Tambakti was stretchered off in the 33rd minute. Despite some close attempts from Cape Verde's Willy Semedo and Jamiro Monteiro, they were unable to find the back of the net.

As the tension mounted in the final quarter of the match, Saudi Arabia lacked creative solutions despite needing a win. A crucial save by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed al-Owais in the 75th minute kept them in the game, but Cape Verde continued to look the more likely to score. Meanwhile, in Zapopan, Mexico, Spain's Alex Baena secured a 1-0 win over Uruguay, solidifying their position as group leaders.

Spain, aiming for their second World Cup title after their 2010 triumph, will begin the knockout stage on July 2 in Inglewood, California. In contrast, Uruguay's tournament ended in disappointment, failing to advance past the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup.

The decisive moment in Spain's match against Uruguay came when Baena capitalized on a defensive lapse, scoring the only goal in the 42nd minute. Uruguay's attempts to recover were marred by injuries and a lack of clear opportunities, culminating in a red card for Agustin Canobbio in stoppage time.
