“Cape Verde has adopted several legal mechanisms aimed at protecting and defending the rights of children and adolescents” – Minister Joana Rosa

In his speech, he also mentioned that the country has been taking significant steps towards consolidating its entire child protection policy and appealed to the Public Ministry, the Ministry of Justice, UNICEF, the Ministry of Family, Inclusion and Social Development and several other Institutions to continue as permanent partners in the fight against this social evil, which has an impact on the lives of families and society.

The Minister of Justice assured this Wednesday, July 20, that, over the years, “Cape Verde has adopted several legal mechanisms, aiming at the protection and defense of the rights of children and adolescents”, enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic and in Ordinary Legislation. Joana Rosa made these remarks during the Public presentation of the Results of the II and III Phase of the partnership between the Attorney General of the Republic and UNICEF, within the scope of the Processing of the Jurisdiction of Family and Minors and of Sexual Crimes Against Children.

“The focus on legal information, but also on raising awareness among the population, must be intensified. We must also rethink the way in which the situation has been seen, if we should not, as a public authority and with responsibilities in the definition of public policies, create mechanisms that aim to reduce social inequalities, empower families, but also create mechanisms effective accountability”, said the Minister.

According to Joana Rosa, this project presented here, sponsored by UNICEF, has an unqualified value because it is not conceivable that, in a country with around half a million inhabitants, there is a significant number of paternity investigation processes.

In turn, the Attorney General of the Republic, Luís José Landim, after thanking UNICEF for this and other future partnerships, maintained that “like the previous Projects, we are certain that we will achieve the desired objectives, being certain that we will always count on the availability of magistrates, court officials, all PGR staff and other relevant entities”.

For UNICEF representative Steven Ursino, UNICEF’s fundamental mission is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does, that is, in programmes, projects and administrative and financial services. . The Diplomat also highlighted the engagement of all team members involved in the project.

“Graças ao esforço e comprometimento dos membros da equipa de trabalho foi possível reduzir em 50%, o n.º de casos pendentes de averiguação oficiosa da paternidade na Comarca da Praia”, acrescentou.
