Cabo Verde Invests in Elderly Care to Enhance Quality of Life

Assomada: Cabo Verde is making strides in improving care for its elderly population, significantly impacting individuals like Ana Rita, who has seen her quality of life improve through regular appointments at a local health unit on the island of Santiago. Ana Rita, who began attending these appointments after suffering a stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been able to return to a semblance of normalcy. She notes the importance of the dedicated space and attention she receives at the center, highlighting the positive effects on her health.

According to African Press Organization, Cabo Verde’s focus on health and socio-economic development over recent decades has notably increased life expectancy, which reached 75 years in 2020. This consistent rise poses new challenges for the country’s health system, necessitating adjustments and improvements in elderly care.

Since early 2022, the World Health Organization has collaborated with Cabo Verde’s Ministry of Health to develop a strategy aimed at enhancing t
he well-being of the elderly. This strategy is rooted in evidence and tailored to the country’s specific needs, marking a significant step in addressing the health challenges associated with an aging population.
