Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Ms. Florence Bore has reiterated that private children’s homes which do not meet the requirements of the law as mandated by the Children’s Act of 2022 must close within eight years.
Addressing the press during a visit to Kisii Children’s Home on the outskirts of Kisii town on Sunday, Ms. Bore expressed appreciation to the private children’s homes for their efforts in caring for children but stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to provide care for children through government-run facilities.
Furthermore, she highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing oversight of private children’s homes due to concerns that some of them were being used for child trafficking.
Bore appealed to residents to desist from abandoning or dumping their children in homes that are unfit and called upon them to volunteer information on anyone involved in child trafficking.
The CS noted that some of the abandoned children have gone on to achieve success in their careers, emphasising the positive outcomes of providing care and support for vulnerable children.
Ms. Bore also toured other counties, including Murang’a, Isiolo, Nakuru, and Nanyuki, as part of the Child Welfare Society of Kenya’s visiting programme.
