Baporo’s Agricultural Initiative for Prisoner Integration Proves Successful


Sanguie: At the Baporo Penitentiary Center, dozens of inmates are serving their sentences on the 130-hectare agricultural site, developed and sown during this rainy season. For this season, the harvest forecast is estimated at 250 tons of grain. On Friday, a government delegation visited the agricultural area where several crops were produced. This site for the social integration of inmates through agricultural activities is enjoying real success due to the commitment of the inmates, the prison supervisors, and especially the commitment of the Minister of Justice to the implementation of this presidential initiative.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the presidential initiative of Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, for the social integration of prisoners from remand and correctional facilities, in prison production centers designed for learning trades and community service is well underway on the Baporo agricultural site.



At the Baporo Penitentiary Center, 130 hectares have been sown for this rainy season. On the site, several dozen inmates from various remand centers and correctional facilities across the country are serving their sentences by carrying out agricultural work. They are thus putting their strength and expertise at the service of the nation in achieving the objectives of the food self-sufficiency offensive.



The effort and commitment of the center’s residents commands admiration from any visitor. Across hectares of green fields as far as the eye can see, corn, rice, sorghum, cowpeas, and soybeans are grown. These various crops are looking good, with hopes of large harvests. The corn is at a more advanced stage than other crops.



The supervising minister, Maitre Edasso Rodrigues Balaya, and his guests, including Minister of State Ismael Sombie and the Minister of Labor and Civil Service, visited the agricultural area with satisfaction. They were amazed by the quality of the fields.



On site, the government delegation found the residents, mostly young, robust, relaxed people, in organized groups with daba in hand, carrying out their work on various speculation sites in a climate of good humor and a feeling of being useful to their nation.



The visitors offered encouraging gestures of consideration and solidarity to the inmates at work. The authorities also held discussions with the inmates. This exchange was used to provide useful advice on their time served, their socioeconomic reintegration upon their release, and to explain the vision of the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore, on community service in prisons.



According to the Minister of Agriculture, Commander Ismael Sombie, the authorities’ vision is to make the Baporo penitentiary center a reference center for the reintegration of prisoners.



Regarding what was given to have, Commander Sombie praised the commitment and self-sacrifice of the prisoners to contribute to the food self-sufficiency of our country. This was an opportunity for him to express his gratitude to the Minister of Justice for the successful implementation of the sites in operation under his leadership.



For his part, the Minister of Justice, Rodrigues Edasso Balaya, congratulated all the actors in the penal chain and the prison administration who are working to properly implement the community service policy initiated by the government and especially the effort made in supervising prisoners for the success of agricultural activities in Baporo.
