Award of the World Biosphere Reserve seal to the island of Fogo still without impact – Authorities

One year after the classification of the island of Fogo, together with the island of Maio, as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, there is still no impact of its classification, said the mayor of São Filipe.

Nuías Silva, who chaired the Advisory Board of Biosphere Reserve Management, said on the sidelines of the workshop to develop the regional strategy of the local platforms program, since the classification has not yet been achieved, and with “half a blame for policy makers, to set in motion a strategy to promote the reserve seal”.

“Who arrives on the island of Fogo and knows that it is a World Biosphere Reserve” questioned Nuías Silva, and later stressed that “nobody knows why there is no sign, no plate”, for example, “welcome to the World Biosphere Reserve”.

He also pointed out that those who go to Chã das Caldeiras and enter a Natural Park of a World Biosphere Reserve “find nothing” lets them understand that they are in a world reserve.
