A Cooperative Society Commits to Food Sovereignty in the Province

Ouagadougou: The Burkina Metba Cooperative Society (SCOOP-CA/BM) officially launched its activities on Saturday, September 13, 2025, in Kongoussi, under the chairmanship of the High Commissioner of Bam Province, Karim Ouedraogo. The initiative aims to contribute to achieving national food sovereignty through the organization and modernization of agriculture in the province.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the chairman of the cooperative’s board of directors, Baowendsom Josue Nanema, emphasized that regional and international instability underscores the need for Burkina Faso to rely on its own agricultural resources. “SCOOP-CA Burkina Metba is responding to the call of the motherland to participate in achieving its long-awaited food sovereignty,” he said.

SCOOP-CA Burkina Metba plans to mobilize producers, make mechanization a core priority, and support its members through agricultural credit. This program will provide seeds, inputs, plant protection products, and drilling for farmers with at least one hectare. Personalized technical monitoring of farmers is also planned to improve yields.

The cooperative also plans to develop several hundred hectares in Bam for the production of tomatoes, corn, rice, and wheat. In addition, a tomato delivery contract has been signed with the APEC SOBTO factory to ensure regular supplies.

To achieve this, according to the PCA, participation from producers, cooperatives, and rural associations is expected. Membership in the cooperative is open to any individual or legal entity, subject to a subscription of 5,000 CFA francs and the acquisition of at least 10 shares, set at 10,000 CFA francs each. High Commissioner Karim Ouedraogo welcomed “a citizen initiative that strengthens the State’s efforts to build a strong, resilient, and wealth-creating agriculture in Bam.” He invited the many producers present to seize this opportunity to increase their yields and actively participate in Burkina Faso’s food sovereignty.

Following the presentation, 14 registrations were immediately recorded and each person received their membership booklet. As a reminder, SCOOP-CA/BM covers the regions of Centre, Nord, Centre-Nord, Hauts-Bassins, Boucle du Mouhoun, Centre-Sud, and Centre-Est. Its headquarters are based in Ouagadougou with offices in the provinces.
