Praia: População das zonas aeroportuárias ciente do perigo

The population living in the airport areas of City of Praia already shows some knowledge about the danger the birds and cattle pose to air operations.

This is one of the results of the first week of the survey conducted by the Institute for the Prevention and Investigation of Aviation and Maritime Accidents (IPIAAM), which is taking place in Praia since July 26 and lasting one month. In this first week, according to IPIAAM, the populations in the neighborhoods of São Tomé, Portete Baixo, Agostinho Alves, Jamaica and Água Funda were surveyed, through more than 50 questionnaires to poultry and livestock farmers.

“They have demonstrated knowledge about the danger the birds pose to airport areas, have been very receptive and interested in collaborating, making the information accurately available,” the same source said in a statement sent to Inforpress. On the other hand, the same source reported that people do not know the Municipal Code of Conduct despite the works disseminated through television and other media.

The survey is carried out in partnership with the “bird-safe” program, created to prevent the risk of the frequent presence of animal life in the airport environment, avoiding the occurrence of collisions of aircraft with birds (bird strike). The program is one of the actions that should contribute to raise awareness among the population and institutions, with regard to the prevention of incidents and, therefore, enable the consolidation of operational security.

According to data from the ASA (Airports and Air Safety), in recent years (2016 to 2021), 76 collisions involving airplanes and birds have been recorded at Praia International Airport.
