Portugal: José Maria Neves receives the Keys to the City of Lisbon

The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, received this Thursday, from the hands of the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, the Keys of the City, the highest distinction awarded by the Portuguese municipality to personalities with national and international relevance.

The handover of the Keys of the City took place in this first of four days of José Maria Neves’ visit to Portugal, at the invitation of his counterpart Portuguese Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, aiming at strengthening historical, political, economic and cultural ties between the two countries.

Carlos Moedas believes that as President of the Republic and with a “long political, local and governmental experience”, José Maria Neves is doing everything to help to “minimize” the current problems that are being lived, some with answers on a more global scale, but others at the local level and with the intervention of local authorities.

“The City Hall have a very important role in combating inequalities,” he said, noting that Lisbon and Cabo Verdean cities have a long history of collaboration as “sister cities”, as is the case of the City of Praia, with which this relationship has existed since 1983, and later in 1997 with the Municipality of Santa Catarina.
