Cabo Verdean international boxer Nancy Moreira, silver medallist at the African Boxing Championships, 63-66 kilograms, would like to devote all her time to boxing and qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The ambition was made in statements to Inforpress, in Lisbon, by the athlete who resides in the North of Portugal, after returning from Mozambique, where the African Boxing Championship took place, a competition with 35 countries, in which Cabo Verde won medals with the only two boxers who participated, being silver for Nancy Moreira and bronze for David Pina.
“I have a burger in partnership with my husband where I earn the money to support myself, but being in tournaments I have to put other people to work, which financially complicates my condition. What I intend to do in the future is leave my job and dedicate myself only to boxing to get qualification next year. But for that I need to be able to support myself”, she confessed.
Nancy Moreira regrets the financial issue that has created “many barriers”, but believes that if the country wants better results, it should “invest more in athletes”, stressing that she, several times, had to “pay to represent” the national team, as well as the internships are supported by her, without forgetting the equipment to be able to present “correctly in competitions”.
