The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will support farmers in the municipality of Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, to combat the American acacia trees which are invading agricultural areas, according to the delegate of this ministry, Joel Barros.
This Ministry, according to Joel Barros, is aware of this situation and will support farmers in the thinning of trees, which can put at risk agricultural activity in some valleys of the municipality of Porto Novo.
The invasion of American acacia trees into agricultural areas has worried farmers, who have been asking the Ministry of Agriculture and environment to carry out a thinning campaign, which, in addition to consuming a lot of water, making agriculture impractical on invaded land, also produce pests.
A little throughout the municipality of Porto Novo, the invasion of American acacia is putting irrigated agriculture at “risk”, with Lajedos and Ponte Sul/Chã de Mato the most affected areas, warned the farmers representative, Augusto Fortes.
