The representative of youth/teenagers at the Forum of Menstrual Period, which takes place in Praia, Andreia Monteiro, lamented this Monday that many girls do not experience their menstrual period in a free and natural way and defended the need to raise awareness on the subject.
The teenager spoke at the Opening of the Forum on “Menstrual Management and Hygiene in Cape Verde” and the launch of the “National Campaign – Menstrual period. It’s normal! Breaking the Taboo”, which aims to contribute to the promotion of human dignity, bodily integrity, health, gender equality and human rights.
For Andreia Monteiro, it is “very relevant” for Verdefam to bring this issue to be reflected on and debated, as it brings “many advantages” to women, defending the need to “break myths” that exist inside and outside the home on this topic.
On the other hand, the Deputy Secretary of State to the Minister of Health, in his speech, mentioned data from UNICEF and other international organizations. He recalled that more than 500 million women and girls are unable to have safe menstrual periods, due to lack of support and material and institutional resources, with 62% having stopped going to school and other places they like because of the difficulties.
