County Government Launches Skills Programme to Enhance VTC Governance

Makueni: Makueni County Government through the Department of ICT, Education and Internship, has embarked on a programme aimed at capacity-building Board of Governors and managers with skills in all the Vocational Training Centres (VTC) in an effort to enhance governance and service delivery.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative involves equipping a board chairperson and a manager from each of the 61 VTCs with vital skills in governance, financial management, asset management, human resource practices, legal compliance, and curriculum development. The induction event, officiated by the Executive Committee Member (CECM) Department of ICT, Education and Internship, Elizabeth Muli, was held at Wote Technical Training College.

Ms. Muli emphasized the critical role of leadership and stewardship in improving VTCs across the county. She stated, “You have been entrusted with a noble responsibility because of your experience, your integrity and your ability to lead. Your selection is not an accident; it is a deliberate action rooted in our belief in inclusive grassroots-led development.”

The CECM further challenged board chairpersons to embrace their mandate with diligence and passion, urging them to be custodians of quality and relevance to emerging technologies and socio-economic development agendas. She highlighted the importance of transparency in resource allocation and the need for visionary leadership in the governance of the board members.

Ms. Muli also underscored the expectation for VTCs to offer opportunities for skill acquisition, innovation, and livelihood creation. “Through this, we are preparing our people for industry-ready trades such as construction, automobile repair, and garment making; technological innovation and digital skill; entrepreneurship and self-employment, especially in our rural peri-urban communities,” she noted.

The event was attended by notable figures, including CECM Devolution Nicholas Nzioka, Governor’s Political Advisor Kiilu Kasamba, Makueni County Public Service Board CEO Redempta Kavindu, Finance Docket’s John Nguni, Education Chief Officer Irene Makau, Director of Procurement Fidel Muema, and Human Resource Director Evelyn Mueni, among others.
